Dietetic Internship: Week 1

I was super nervous for class on Monday. My first class, where we review our rotations, was canceled, because well, we haven’t had a full rotation yet. My second class is Advanced Medical Nutrition Therapy I (MNT). It was 2.5 hours and I haven’t had any MNT really in 2-ish years. I was crazy nervous that I would be so lost the first day of class. Glad to report class went great and I loved it! I’ll probably eat those words in like 2 months, but still. We eased into the material by discussing the Nutrition Care Process. My last class of the day was the research proposal class. We had two guest speakers who spoke about their children’s food allergies. I really enjoyed it! Learning about food allergies is one thing we don’t get much exposure to in college so it was really interesting and eye opening to hear […]

What I Ate Wednesday #3

This is an exciting WIAW (What I Ate Wednesday) for me! This is my first time doing one as a dietetic intern. Before, I felt like my WIAW were all pretty similar because my schedule was pretty standard. Now my schedule is ever changing! I’m excited to share how my meals differ with my lifestyle change. Today was my week 1 of rotations and my second day back at the old WIC office. I’m still adjusting to the time and schedule changes aka we were rushing to get out the door this morning. I needed something that traveled well and I could manage eating while driving so I ended up with this protein bar and my coffee. I tried this brand on the recommendation of a fellow intern and I really like them! I’m not a big coconut person, but the coconut one is my favorite so far. This chocolate […]

Dietetic Internship Orientation Recap

GUYS. I can f i n a l l y say I’m a dietetic intern !!!!!!!!!! I started my dietetic internship like a week and a half ago. Well, that’s when orientation started at least–which still counts! And is why you’re all here… right? Here’s the breakdown… My internship has 12 people in it, including me. We’re all full-time and on kinda similar schedules. Every Monday we have class together all day. Three days a week we have rotations, which are all different (or sometimes the same). The remaining one day left is our graduate research assistant day (RA day for short). I’m really liking my internship class so far! Half of the class graduated from Marshall’s undergrad, the rest of us are a mix. Me and one other girl are from WVU and the rest are from out of state. I feel like we have a pretty good mix. […]

So, What is a Dietetic Internship Anyways?

“So, what is a dietetic internship anyways?” is probably the single most question I’ve been asked since matching to my dietetic internship back in April 2017. Actually, if I’m being honest no one even knows it’s called a dietetic internship. Unless you’re actively trying to work towards a dietetic internship or you’ve survived one already, most people don’t really know what a dietetic internship entails or even what it means. Which I totally get people not understanding. I barely understood the process until my last year of college and it’s what I was actively trying to do with my life.  If you’re reading this, it means you’re obviously curious about the dietetic internship. So let’s jump in! So, what is a dietetic internship? The dietetic internship is designed to provide, at minimum, 1,200 hours of supervised practice. The time given to complete your hours differs from internship to internship. Some are […]

Leaving My Job & Preparing For The Dietetic Internship

I honestly don’t even know where to start about leaving my job. I loved working at WIC so much and I’m definitely going to miss it. My time there really fueled my love for working in community nutrition and I can’t wait to return to the field after my internship. My final day was last week. But from where I traveled for work, I had “final” days at each site. At Cabell, my friend Shelley made me delicious mini cherry vanilla chocolate chip muffins and double chocolate cake. My goodbye party was at Kanawha though. This was my home site. They threw a Mexican themed pot luck. My work sister and friend, Kadija, has been on maternity leave. She stopped by for the lunch and brought my favorite kind of baby–a big, fat, breastfed baby. It was so good to spend time with everyone. I hadn’t been at Kanawha lately, […]
