White Watermelon Summer Sangria

I’m well known with my close friends for making ah-mazing homemade sangria. Probably because I had my sangria phase. No seriously, there was a fresh pitcher of sangria in my fridge every weekend (read: daily) for about a solid year. I was known for showing up to a gathering with a pitcher in my hand. Benefits of living in the same apartment complex as your best friends, easy transportation.

I’m not much of a white wine drinker. I tend to like my wine dark, like my coffee, wardrobe, and soul. That being said, there is nothing like a Riesling sometimes. It’s like Riesling was created for sangria. Trust me on this. It’s my secret to success. Okay, let’s not go that far, but still.

As I was cutting up a decent sized watermelon from Aldi for my weekly meal prep, I couldn’t help but think how perfect it would go in some sangria. Remembering what it was like to be balling on a budget, I decided to create a money friendly recipe, purchasing all my ingredients from Aldi. LOL, who am I kidding? Ya girl is still balling on a budget. I did this for me. And a little for you all too.

Unfortunately, our local Aldi in Morgantown does not carry a Riesling. Completely heart breaking. Instead, I improvised (read: didn’t feel like going to another grocery store) and picked up a large bottle of White Zinfandel (yes, I remember my first glass of wine) for $7.99. I also threw a bottle of Fit & Active Strawberry Lemonade in my cart.

In a large pitcher (it’s actually a large Sangria pitcher from Target for $8), I tossed in roughly half a watermelon and poured in the entire bottle of wine. I always keep no sugar added frozen fruit from Aldi on hand in my freezer for smoothies, so I grabbed a bag of mixed berries (blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries) and dumped them in too. Basically, I kept adding things until I was happy. Pretty much how I handle life.

I let the fruit soak in the wine overnight. I added half the bottle of zero calorie and sugar Fit & Active Strawberry Lemonade the next evening before drinking. I gave a good stir before pouring and serving.

This stuff was seriously too good. No honestly, the first sip made me wonder why I ever stopped my homemade sangria phase. Probably because help me I’m poor, but ya know.

Aaron and I enjoyed this with naked zucchini turkey burgers on a bed of swiss chard while watching our newest Netflix binge watching show, Daredevil.

  • ½ watermelon, cut
  • 1 bag of no sugar added, frozen mixed berry fruit
  • 1 large bottle of White Zinfandel wine
  • Aldi's Fit & Active Strawberry Lemonade
  1. Add all fruit to large sangria pitcher. Pour in entire bottle of wine.
  2. Let sit roughly 8 hours. Longer the fruit can soak, the better.
  3. Add mixer, half the bottle of zero calorie and sugar Fit & Active Strawberry Lemonade.
  4. Give a good stir and enjoy!
